The 2026 marathon is sold out, and registration for 2027 opens on Saturday 19 December 2026. Places go first come, first served, and resale of other runners' bibs runs through the registration platform

Amsterdam starts and finishes in the stadium that held the 1928 Olympic marathon. In between you follow part of that Olympic course beside the Amstel, loop through the Vondelpark and pass under the Rijksmuseum. The course is billed as flat, fast and historical, and the race holds a World Athletics Platinum Label.

The marathon is on Sunday 31 October 2027, the second day of the organiser's race weekend on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October. The 2027 programme isn't out, so the times, the expo hours and the start waves are the 2026 ones.

The 2026 marathon is sold out. There is no waiting list, but other runners can sell their bibs through the registration platform. Registration for 2027 opens on Saturday 19 December 2026.

Getting to Amsterdam 2026 details

From Schiphol, trains run eight times an hour to Amsterdam Centraal and take 17 minutes, according to the city's tourist board. Intercity Direct trains have also run between Schiphol and Amsterdam Zuid since 2025, and Zuid is the station you want on race day. The same Dutch Railways service links Rotterdam Central to Amsterdam South in 25 minutes.

On the Sunday, take the metro to Station Zuid, from where the way to the Olympic Stadium is signposted. Large parts of the city are shut to traffic. Tram and bus services are limited, so don't count on a tram across the centre. The 2026 notice closes Amstelveenseweg metro station from 13:00 to 18:00 on race day, so go home through Station Zuid as well.

Parking near the stadium is scarce. Parking at the RAI, at the ArenA and at Station Noord comes with a metro ride, and there's a bike shed near the Na-Druk-Geluk bridge. The stadium's own car park isn't open to runners.

Where to stay in Amsterdam

The Olympic Stadium is a walk from Station Zuid, and the organiser recommends the metro. A bed on a metro line is worth more than one near the canals. Zuid is also where the organiser sends you for the walk to the expo.

The centre is fine too, but the trams are limited that morning, so work out the metro ride the evening before.

Collecting your number 2026 details

Everyone collects at the Marathon Expo in RAI Amsterdam, including runners with a foreign address. You show a personal QR code, sent by email in early October. The organiser says it is also in the Le Champion app. The same code collects the shirt and any extras you ordered.

In 2026 the expo opens on Thursday from 13:00 to 20:00, Friday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Saturday from 9:00 to 19:00. It is closed on Sunday, when no bibs are handed out. If you can't go, someone else can collect with a copy of your race bib email.

The expo has no cash machine, though most stands take cards. On Sunday there's a merchandise stand beside the stadium, open from 8:00, with last-minute gels.

Race morning 2026 details

There are two start areas, each for 16,000 runners. Area A is on the field inside the stadium and area B is on the Stadionweg, outside it. The colour of your bib sets your wave, and in 2026 the waves were these.

Expected finishWaveStart
Up to 2:40, and invited athletes1, white9:00
2:40 to 3:152, yellow9:02
3:15 to 3:453, pink9:11
3:45 to 4:004, orange9:24
4:00 to 4:305, green9:34
4:30 to 6:006, blue9:43

In area A the Athletes Only Zone opens at 7:00 with your bib, and you can enter it only once. The marathon gate opens at 7:45. Waves 1 and 2 must be on the field by 8:50. Waves 3 and 4 can also use the stairs on the outside of the stadium. Area B opens at 8:00. Clothing tents are free and open until 17:00, though the organiser takes no responsibility for losses. Area A has them in the Athletes Only Zone from 7:30 to 17:00, and area B has them at the IJsbaanpad from 7:45 to 17:00.

The time limit is 6 hours. The 2026 checkpoints are 10:31 at 5 km, 11:13 at 10 km, 11:55 at 15 km, 12:36 at 20 km and 13:18 at 25 km. The organiser's "broom wagon" (the sweeper vehicle) follows the last runners at the checkpoint pace. If you fall behind it, a member of the jury asks you to leave the race and get in for your safety. You can carry on at your own risk. The course reopens to traffic behind the wagon, and a runner it picks up gets no medal and can't finish in the Olympic Stadium. The finish closes at 17:00.

There are toilets outside the stadium and at every drinks station.

The course 2026 details

The 2026 route follows the Amstel, passes the Heineken Experience, runs under the Rijksmuseum and loops through the Vondelpark. The organiser describes it as flat and fast. Its course page has a map and elevation graph, but no total climb figure.

The organiser's course map is a PDF on its marathon page, and it offers no course file to download. Drinks are at 5, 8, 11, 16, 18, 20, 25, 27, 30, 31, 33, 35, 38, 40 and 40.5 km. The stations carry water, sponges, bananas, a sports drink and gels, in an order set out on the course page. You can't have your own bottles delivered to them.

You finish inside the Olympic Stadium in front of the grandstand. Keep walking after the line. You get the medal, a heat sheet and water at the finish in the stadium. Outside the stadium you get a banana, a Maurten bar and water. The medal engraving stand is in Sporthallen Zuid.

Weather in Amsterdam in October

Mid-October mornings are cold and, in some years, windy. These are the last five race days at the Olympic Stadium, at 9:00 and at 13:00. The 2027 race is 11 days after the latest of these dates, 20 October 2024.

Afterwards 2026 details

In 2026 the Saturday has a 7.5K, a children's run and a pasta party in the evening. The Sunday has the half marathon at 13:20, so the stadium stays busy through the afternoon.

Other race weekends

Close by, and with guides of their own, are Berlin Marathon, Paris Marathon and TCS London Marathon.
